About Apple Blossom Flower Farm

Get to Know Your Farmer Florist

Hi! I’m Candace, your local Kansas City flower farmer. I come from a very long line of farmers in south-central Kansas. I was the family rebel: I married a Missouri boy and moved to Kansas City.

But I’ve loved gardening for years. My family jokes that if you can’t find me in the house, I’m probably checking my flower beds. Growing flowers and plants from seed was first just a hobby for me and my children. We’d start them in cups in the kitchen window then plant them outside every spring. We’d watch them grow and pick the produce and flowers. My son loved growing his veggies in the backyard that he grew from seed.

A Dream Takes Root

Everything changed in February 2022. My husband and kids gave me grow lights for my birthday. And later that day in church, I had a bit of an epiphany: “I just want to grow flowers.” I didn’t know exactly what that would look like, but I knew it’s what I wanted to do. I told my husband, and he was all in.

At first I thought, maybe we’ll just get a greenhouse in our backyard and grow a few plants to sell to friends and family. Maybe we’ll sell some at the farmers market. But … What would I do after I sold those plants? That’s when I learned all I could about cut flowers so we could continue selling bouquets. I LOVED that idea. There was just one problem. We live in the ‘burbs with a lovely but rather shady backyard and only a few small spots where you can grow. I looked at land to buy or rent, but I couldn’t afford anything I saw. My dream started to feel out of reach.

But around this time, a friend helping us move a piano noticed my flowers at home. I shared my dream, and he offered his land, which just happens to be the site of Stephenson’s Apple Orchard. I couldn’t believe it. It was really going to happen!

Apple Blossom Flower Farm is Born

In August 2022, my son and I planted our first 30 sunflower seeds for giggles. We sold every. Single. One.

My husband built a greenhouse for me that fall. After months of balancing my full-time job and my farm, I quit my desk job of 14+ years in April 2023, and here we are!

At our farm, we try very hard to be environmentally conscious and don’t use any pesticides or herbicides. Moving forward, we aim to be as low-till as we can, to continue to care for the land and have the best soil possible. We grow specialty cut flowers for subscriptions, farmers markets, individual bouquets and florists. We also grow some vegetables for the farmers markets. We believe buying locally grown flowers and produce is better for everyone.
